Historical Context
The Venus of Lespugue is one of the most celebrated sculptures of Upper Paleolithic art, dating to approximately 25,000 years ago. The original figurine was discovered in 1922 in the Rideaux Cave near Lespugue, France, and is widely regarded as one of the most expressive examples of prehistoric symbolic representation.
Characterized by its exaggerated hips, breasts and abdomen, the figure is often interpreted as a symbol of fertility, life and abundance in Paleolithic societies. Today it remains a fundamental reference for the study of prehistoric art, early human symbolism and Ice Age sculpture.
